Gold and diamond jewellery worth over Rs 25 lakh was stolen from the house of a civil contractor in Malleswaram Tuesday evening when the family had gone out for a birthday party.

M A Kumar reportedly saw the burglars leaving his house, Kantha Nilaya, at around 9.30 pm. The police said the burglary took place between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm.

The burglars entered the house on the 7th main and 9th cross through a back door. Kumar, who returned at around 9.30 pm, noticed movement inside the house but the burglars escaped even as he entered from the front door.

The police said one burglar ran past Kumar through the front door, while another escaped from the back door.

Anitha, wife of Kumar, returned home after she was informed of the incident to find gold jewels weighing 540 grams, a diamond necklace and two diamond earrings missing.

The family has sought time from the police to check and provide accurate details of the stolen property.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Sandeep Patil said the burglars may be habitual offenders recently released from jail. Much of the cash and other jewellery in the house was saved as Kumar returned early from the party.

“The burglars would have stolen all valuables had Kumar returned home a little later,’’ the police said.

The north division police have formed a special team to crack the case.
