To tackle the shortage of parking spaces in the Capital, the South Municipal Corporation has identified and approved 12 new sites for surface parking.

Senior officials acknowledged that finding parking space was difficult, especially on weekends. They said unauthorised parking has compounded the problem.

During meetings with Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority and Traffic department, the corporation identified many stretches, of which 12 have been approved for parking.

The approved stretches are Lajpat Nagar near reservation office, Feroze Gandhi Marg near Lajpat Nagar, Living Style Mall in Jasola, Panchwati Tughlakabad, Eros Cinema in Jangpura, Katwaria Sarai, Gulmohar Enclave, East Of Kailash near government school, Aurobindo Place, community centre in Shekh Sarai Phase-II, Adhchini near BSES office, and Pushpa Bhawan between Madangir and Sheikh Sarai.

However, the car occupancy of parking lots is yet to be finalised.

According to officials, major traffic snarls are witnessed at 12 sites due to improper parking. “The places we have identified are open spaces, where people can park their cars without fear of towing, which creates unnecessary tension in the area,” the official said.

Many sites were rejected by the Traffic department. “We have been told that parking at many stretches we suggested will not be feasible. We will have a detailed discussion on this,” a senior official said.
