As expected, Dilip Vengsarkar XI saw off Sunil Gavaskar XI, defeating them by an innings and 95 runs to record their third successive win in the league to lift the Madhav Mantri Trophy for the U-22 Cricket Tournament on the third and final day of the contest at Cross Maidan on Wednesday. The win definitely came in more comfortable fashion than the champions themselves would have expected, with Gavaskar XI, who resumed at 50 for 4 following on, folding up for a mere 109 in their second innings.

They had collapsed for just 167 in response to Vengsarkar XI's first innings score of 371 on the second day, and things just got worse for Gavaskar XI as they lost their final six wickets for just 59 runs to hand the eventual champions a easy win. Akshay Ghorpade was the only batsman to even make an impression, top-scoring with 34. The rest were done in by Vengsarkar XI's spin twins, off-spinner Pratik Gavli (3/26) and leg-spinner Sagar Gorivale (4/22), who left the opposition batsmen in tangles. Ravi Shastri XI beat Sachin Tendulkar XI by nine wickets, meanwhile, in the other league game at the Oval Maidan. Resuming at 96 for 3 in their second innings, Tendulkar XI went on to reach 201 with Shalabh Agarwal finishing up with an elegant 87, an innings which included 10 fours. Off-spinner Ankush Jaiswal was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5/63, leaving Tendulkar XI with only a lead of 137.
