New Delhi, June 21: Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has virtually opposed the government’s stand on job reservations in private sector.
Addressing his maiden press conference as CII president, Mr Sunil Kant Munjal said: “Merit cannot be compromised. We cannot afford to compromise competitiveness in corporates. Rather than a patchwork approach, government should try to upgrade skills of the backward section of society.”
But expressing hope on the issue, he added, “It is part of the common minimum programme (CMP) and yet to be formulated as a policy. We believe that the government will consult industry before taking any decision. There are other ways of employment generation and CII is planning to take a proactive role.”
It was unfortunate that many polytechnic institutes were still providing training in areas like typing which have become obsolete. There is a need to evolve training and education system relevant in the present context, he said.
Commenting on the forthcoming Budget, Mr Munjal said: “By and large this Budget will be in the same direction (like Budgets prepared by previous government). We are, however, expecting emphasis on agriculture and rural economy, infrastructure, widening of the tax base and thrust on manufacturing industry.”
He said farm sector should grow at the rate of 3 per cent from the present level of 2.8 per cent while industry and services should grow at 9 per cent.
On developing railway infrastructure, he said, “We propose a 5 per cent cess on passenger railways for upgrading infrastructure.”
