About a year-and-a-half after the construction started, CIDCO placed Thursday the first girder on the Belapur-Pendhar line, the first metro corridor in Navi Mumbai.

The development authority expects to complete construction of the viaduct in 24 months. The viaduct will cost Rs 305 cr and has been split into two parts to be constructed by Nagarjuna Construction Company and J Kumar Infraprojects.

The first girder on the 11.10-km line was placed on the piers near Belpada Junction in the portion under Nagarjuna Construction Company.

“We expected to complete the construction by May 2014. However, due to technical difficulties there has been a delay. We now expect the construction to be complete by December 2014. The line should be open to public three months after that,” a CIDCO spokesperson said.

The development authority had started construction of the Belapur-Pendhar corridor in May 2011. The line is being constructed at a cost of Rs 1,985 crore.

CIDCO has also fast-tracked construction of the 11 stations on the corridor. The construction expected to take another 22 months has also been split into two parts and will cost Rs 321 crore.

Similarly, a car depot being built at a cost of Rs 132 crore will be completed in 22 months, while assembly of rolling stock, signaling, power supply, track laying, communications and other works will be completed in the next two years.
