Chhattisgarh Cong worker held for rape
Arvind Tewari, 35, had unsuccessfully contested the 2009 Chhattisgarh civic polls as a Congress candidate. Tewari was arrested after the medical test of the girl confirmed assault, said Raigarh Additional Police Commissioner Praful Thakur.
The girl had complained that Tewari had raped her 10 days ago when he was alone at home, Thakur said.
She alleged in her complaint that Tewari had threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the crime and had later again sexually assaulted her.
The police official said that on the basis of girl’s complaint, police had registered a case against Tewari and arrested him.
Another J&K panch attacked
A day after unidentified gunmen killed a sarpanch, suspected militants stuck again in Sopore Saturday evening and shot at and seriously injured a woman panchayat member.
Police sources said that around 7.30 pm, unidentified gunmen forcibly entered the house of Mohammad Ramzan Dar and fired upon his wife Zoona Begum in Hardsihva village of Sopore. A panchayat member, she is affiliated to the Congress. She has been referred to S K Institute of Medical Sciences Srinagar in a critical condition, a police spokesman said.
On Friday, sarpanch Habibullah Mir, also affiliated to the Congress, was killed by suspected militants in Bomai area of Sopore in north Kashmir.
