Indians need to change their diet habits by consuming different food items, otherwise providing a "nutritious" food cover to the vast population can be a herculean task, noted farm scientist M S Swaminathan said.
"We should diversify our food habits or else it will be very difficult to provide nutritious food security to the growing population," Swaminathan said at the Agriculture Leadership Summit here today.
He reiterated that a focus on agriculture is the key to containing the fears of inflation. Swaminathan stressed on the amalgamation of sophisticated technology, good services, public policy and farmers' enthusiasm to usher in an "Ever-Green Revolution" in the country.
The architect of the Green Revolution said the fruits of agriculture will be in step with things that are being sown in terms of public policy and support.
Speaking on the occasion, Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar expressed his concern at the "poor handling" of land acquisition row in West Bengal and other parts of the country.
"Land is priceless for the farmers and that can't be compensated at any price," Swaminathan said.
Haryana Governor A R Kidwai said awareness needs to be created among farmers to prop up the agriculture sector.
National Disaster Management Authority N C Vij, stressing on the role of government policies, said all policies and guidelines in the farm sector must go hand-in-hand with disaster management, as more than half of the productive land in the country is prone to floods.
