Centre To Invest Rs 500 Crore To Promote Indian Destinations

Mumbai, Jan 28:: Cashing in on the varied experiences that India has to offer to both domestic as well as foreign visitors, the ministry of tourism, the government of India, is all set to invest around Rs 500 crore in the coming fiscal to put India on the very top of the world’s most desired destinations.

Government officials said that a 15 per cent increase in growth for the sector was likely this year with the number of foreign visitors’ arrivals on the rise.

The ministry is also actively looking into the restoration of heritage sites. It has already done reconstructive work in the Ajanta Elora Caves and is in the process of looking at the Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb in New Delhi, among other heritage sites in the country.

Rathi Vinay Jha, tourism secretary, government of India, told FE that the ministry of tourism will be spending about Rs 500 crore for marketing, human resource development and infrastructure initiatives to promote India as a destination which has different experiences to offer every tourist.

The ministry is also targeting overseas markets like Germany, China (which is lately opening up with a huge number of enquiries coming in for the Buddhist places of interest), France, UK and America.

Domestic tourism is also being emphasised on and the department of tourism is looking to develop destinations like Jammu and Kashmir and the Andaman Islands.
