Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: The Bhubaneswar chapter of the All India Central Excise Inspectors' Association has demanded immediate filling up of vacant posts in the cadre. As against the sanctioned strength of 281, only 160 inspectors now work in the zone.
"As a result of the shortage of staff, it is becomong difficult to keep a vigil on smuggling activities along the 480-km costline of Orissa", said Pramod Dhal, the secretary of the association. The manpower shortage was also making it impossible to check surreptitious leakage of revenues, he added.
The revenue collection of the Bhubaneswar central excise, customs & service tax zone registered a growth of 23% to Rs 2907 crore in 2006-07 compared with Rs 2360 crore in the previous year. The growth was attributed to sincere efforts of inspectors, the cutting edge cadre of the department working in the field, Dhal said.
The association has also expressed its concern over the lack of opportunities for promotions. An inspector has to wait at least 15-20 years to get promoted, he said.
The association observed a one-day strike on Tuesday in support of the 12-point demand. The Confederation of Central Government Employees & Workers called the strike. The demands include lifting of the ban on recruitment, filling up existing vacancies, scrapping of the FERDA Bill, and implementation of the 6 th Central Pay Commission's recommendations.
