Indians Googled for Bollywood hits and the Indian Premier League the most in 2013. Globally, people like Nelson Mandela and Paul Walker and gadgets like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S topped Google search charts.

Google’s annual Zeitgeist (German for the spirit of the times) for 2013 revealed that Indians’ first love, is for stars, movies, and songs as Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan were the top searched celebs and in movies, Chennai Express and Aashiqui 2 came up top.

This year, searches for the IPL broke records for the amount of online searches for latest scores and results. These results diverged from last year’s Zeitgeist, that reflected an emphasis on utilitarian searches related to seeking information for personal needs such as shopping and booking tickets.

The announcement of Narendra Modi as the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate was among the top searched online news in India this year.

The top three searches on mobile were restaurants, bars and movies followed by coffee, cricket score and fast food.

“From a search trends perspective, 2013 was clearly the year of entertainment. Shah Rukh’s Lungi Dance from Chennai Express, Aashiqui 2, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, Telugu actor Kajal and her counterpart, the young rebel star Prabhas and singer Honey Singh ruled 2013... Online shopping, banking, and e-commerce also continued their upward trend — a clear testimony to Indians embracing online transactions,” Google India V-P and MD (sales and operations) Rajan Anandan said.
