Chandra (TCS’s Chandra-sekaran), who is one of the finest CEOs this country has produced,” NR Narayana Murthy, executive chairman, Infosys, said, after winning the Lifetime Achievement Award at the first Express IT Awards held in Bangalore on Saturday evening.
Murthy, who came out of retirement earlier this year to lead Infosys for a second time, received a standing ovation from the Who’s Who of the IT industry at the glittering awards ceremony, held at the Marriott Whitefield.
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, managing director and CEO, Tata Consultancy Services, was awarded the Newsmaker of the Year Award. In a message, Chandrasekaran said he was honoured to have been nominated for the award and thanked the team at TCS, saying it was a recognition of their effort.
KJ George, Karnataka home minister, who was the chief guest for the evening, said the state government was committed to extending complete support to the IT sector, while promising to improve the infrastructure in Bangalore. “Rajiv Gandhi’s vision really changed the outlook for India. He told us we cannot miss the electronic revolution,” George said.
In a special address, Nandan Nilekani, UIDAI chairman, observed that much like the Internet and GPS, which were initiated by public spending and had resulted in the creation of multi-billion dollar companies, Aadhaar might be able to do the same in India. Nilekani observed that transactions based on Aadhaar were in the region of R1,300 crore currently.
The awards function was attended by a host of CEOs from the IT space. Among those present were Ashok Soota, chairman, Happiest Minds; Subroto Bagchi, chairman, MindTree; TV Mohandas Pai, chairman, Manipal Global Education, and Lalitesh Katragadda, country head (products), Google India.
The awards were chosen after intense scrutiny by a panel comprising UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani, vice-president and managing director of Google India Rajan Anandan,TV Mohandas Pai, chairman and managing director of Biocon Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and director of International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, S Sadagopan.
