The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the proposal for four container terminals and one multi-purpose cargo berth project entailing an investment of R17,631 crore in port infrastructure. The proposed container projects, one each in the major ports of Kandla, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Ennore and Kolkata, will double the container handling capacity of major ports and will add capacity to the tune of 11.6 mteu (or million twenty feet equivalent units), an official release said.
The multi≠purpose cargo berth proposed for the Mumbai Port Trust will entail a capacity addition of 4.5 MTPA and will benefit industries located in the hinterland, it said. These projects will bring in the latest technology and will be in line with global standa-rds. These facilities will boost export-import trade and redu-ce transaction costs by impro-ving efficiency in handling operations, the release added.
The CCEA has also approved modifications in the Mega Food Park Scheme guidelines of infrastructure development for food processing. These modifications are envisaged to streamline the implementation of the scheme and are expected to trigger further investment in the food processing sector.
