The CBI is probing two CDs — one containing alleged voice recordings of BJP MP from Junagadh Dinu Solanki alias Dinu Bogha, a suspect in RTI activist Amit Jethwa’s murder case, and another containing videos of illegal sand mining in Gir region.
The first is an alleged voice recording of Solanki purportedly threatening a Koli leader of Junagadh for supporting Jethwa’s family’s fight for justice. Jethwa is suspected to have been killed due to his stand against illegal sand mining.
The CDs, now with the CBI (copies of which are with The Indian Express) have recordings of Solanki’s phone conversation of 11 minutes with Kodinar Koli Samaj president Haresh Damania in August 2010. Solanki reportedly called up Damania after allegations that the latter’s brother had beaten up his kin. The MP is reportedly heard telling Damania that he would meet the same fate as Jethwa if he went against him.
The recorded conversation in Gujarati is as follows: “Tane koi bachavi na sake Haria. Tare Kodinar ma rehvu che ke nahi? Mari upar bhale 302 thayi jaaye. Mare ek varas jail ma rehvu pade ke das divas, Haria tu mara thi bachi nahi sake (No one can save you Haria (Haresh). Do you want to stay in Kodinar or not? Whether I go to jail for one year or 10 years under section 302, you won’t be saved)...Amitbhai mara mitra che. Aemne badhi khabar che ke su thayu tu. To pan tane bahu garmi chadhi che? Su samjhe che tu potane? (Amitbhai (purportedly former MoS Home Amit Shah) is my friend and he knows everything. Even after knowing what happened (to Jethwa) you still want to go against me? Who do you think you are?).”
The CBI, assuming the reference in this conversation is to Shah, reportedly plans to question him for his role in the case. The agency has already grilled Solanki. However, the CBI received the CD after Solanki’s questioning was over. The probe agency is likely to question him again.
The CDs were sent to the CBI headquarters in Delhi in May by Jethwa’s father Bhikha Jethwa. In a note to the CBI, which is attached to the CD, Bhikha has said, “Damania had shown the CD to Shah in 2010 before he was arrested in the Sohrabuddin encounter case...However, Shah did not do anything about the case and the state government refused to accept any complaint against Dinu Solanki.”
A CBI officer associated with the probe said, “We have received the audio CD containing voice records and another video CD having visuals of sand mining in Gir against which Jethwa was reportedly fighting. The call records of Solanki have been received and analysis of both along with CDRs of his nephew and others will give a clear picture of the conspiracy behind the murder.”
The video CD shows vidoe grabs of bulldozers and trucks mining sand. The labourer caught on camera is heard saying that on and off contracts are given to them to pick up sand from the area and take it to Junagadh for sale. When asked why unregistered vehicles were used for collecting sand, he said that the (sand mining) company managers had given vehicles but the labour contract comes through five different people who are connected to them. The man who runs this company is reported to be a business partner of Dinu Solanki’s nephew Shiva Solanki who runs a construction business of supplying sand and other material. Shiva is in jail in connection with Jethwa’s murder.
Bhikha claimed in the note, “Solanki was using a mobile phone (8758903001) which is in the name of Bharatbhai of Sutrapada. He used this phone to call several persons, including Jethwa, before his murder. The police claimed there were no call details to prove he was behind the conspiracy and murder; however, the call records (on this number) if observed will show how many times he spoke to his nephew Shiva and others who are in jail for murdering Jethwa. The phone’s location and details show a clear involvement of Dinu Solanki in the murder.”
