Kochi, Jan 20: In the backdrop of tsunami disaster, cashew export promotion council has mooted creating a greenbelt of cashew trees along the coastline which can act as a windbreaker and a wall to check soil erosion and reduce the effects of cyclones and tidal waves.
Besides, it would help the industry that was now dependant on raw cashewnut import, said the council chairman P Bharatan Pillai in a statement. It would help to utilise less fertile lands for raising a commercial crop with good potential and increase employment opportunities in agriculture and industry.
Research institutions had raised high-yielding varieties and evolved efficient practices that had to be put to good use in girdling up our coastal areas against the fury of oceans, it said. There is a growing view that a green belt along the coastal areas could help to check the impact of natural disasters and reduce loss of life.
