Candlelight vigil held in support of Irom Sharmila

The Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC) in collaboration with NGO Yuvsatta organized a candle light vigil at Sector 17 Plaza to mark the twelfth anniversary of 12 years of hunger strike by Irom Sharmila who is protesting against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in Manipur.

Faisal Khan, leader of SSSC, said that Irom Sharmila, a Manipuri poet-activist has been on a hunger protest for 12 years now. For this, SSSC has in the past organised various events such as candle vigils, documentary sessions, public awareness rallies, press conferences, sit-in protests, delegation meets with NHRC and a memorandum to the Prime Minister.

Sairen Paikhomba, President, Manipur Students Association in Chandigarh said they strongly feel that AFSPA in Manipur should be removed and that livelihood security among the people needs to be maintained for a better future.

Members of Bal Panchayat and volunteers of Yuvsatta also participated in the candle light vigil. Pramod Sharma, coordinator of Yuvsatta, stated that this needs the mutual support of people from all across the country and that civil society should come forward and support Irom Sharmila.
