



Chandigarh, June 22: Stressing the importance of Murrah buffaloes in dairy sector, Haryana agriculture minister Harmohinder Singh Chatha said on Wednesday the state earned a revenue of Rs 200 crore every year by exporting the buffaloes to developed countries like Australia, Canada and the US.
The minister said the Murrah buffaloes were capable of meeting the increasing demand of milk and their demand is multiplying fast on the national and as well as the international front.
Chatha further added that the consolidated information about Murrah buffaloes had been put on the internet.
He said people from different districts of the state were taking keen interest in rearing this breed of buffaloes. He also stated that nearly 4.5 crore buffaloes were available in Karnal district alone, out of which two lakh buffaloes belonged to the Murrah breed.
Chatha said rearing Murrah buffaloes was an important source of income for marginal and landless farmers. The state government had taken up the task of insuring the milch cattle for which 50% premium was being paid by the government.

The department was giving a subsidy of Rs 1000 per buffalo under this scheme, Chatha added.
