Kolkata: The Alipur Judges Court has asked Britannia Industries to make an interim payment of Rs 6.63 crore to Kolkata Port Trust by this month to avail a stay order against the proposed eviction drive from the Taratala premise.
“The court has asked Britannia to pay an interim amount of Rs 6.63 crore if they want to get a stay order,” said AK Mehera, land manager (in-charge) of KoPT.
Britannia declined to comment on the issue and the steps it would take next since the matter is sub-judice.
Port Trust, which owns the Taratala land where Britannia has its factory, had issued a notice to Britannia last month following a prolonged rent dispute with the company.
Britannia carries out its manufacturing, planning, logistics and sales operations for the eastern region from the 45,483 sq m factory which has been leased out to the company for 60 years.
Earlier last month, Port Trust asked Britannia to pay Rs 13 crore towards rent and penalty. An estate officer of the Port Trust issued an eviction decree on October 15 under the Public Premises Act and gave the company 15 days to vacate the premises.
“We will take any further legal action only if Britannia violates the court order. The stay order is conditional,” said Mehra.
Meanwhile, a section of senior sales team of the company has asked for relocation to other centres. The company, which produces flagship products like Thin Arrowroot, Marie and Top from the Taratala factory, has 600 employees.
According to sources in the company, it has promised unions that no worker will be retrenched owing to the dispute with Port Trust.
