HC: Can’t export banned gutkha
Mumbai:Bombay High Court (HC) declined relief Monday to Kirti Industries and SJJ Exports, whose gutkha consignment worth Rs 3.7 crore was seized by Food and Drugs Administration on August 23 last year, pursuant to a July 19, 2012, notification banning the tobacco product.
HC said export of a banned food product could be restricted under Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006.
Train develops fault, pushed on track
Mumbai:A train developed a snag on the ramp at Reay Road Monday and came to a stop. Railway authorities asked passengers to vacate, following which the empty train was pushed by another and came to life.
Man gets life for raping, killing teen
Mumbai:A sessions court held UP native Nagendra Kumar Paswan (24) guilty Monday of raping and murdering a 19-year-old and sentenced him to life. Nagendra came to Mumbai in search of employment and was staying in the basement of an Elphinstone garment factory, where he and the victim worked. The prosecution said Paswan had an argument with the teen in July 2010, after she turned down his marriage proposal. He then took her to the ground floor and raped and strangled her.
Christians complain against calendar
Mumbai:Days after a New Year calendar was published in Pune by former Sena corporator Tanaji Lonkar, Catholic forums in Mumbai lodged police complaints Monday. The calendar showed Jesus Christ holding a cigarette and a beer can. Lonkar said, “We immediately withdrew the calender and I apologised.”
Attack, loot on Chennai Express
Mumbai:The pantry car manager of Chennai Express was attacked and looted Monday morning. Gulam Sheikh, cousin of victim Ashik Hussain, said, “When the train was near Pune, accused Manish misbehaved with a girl. She complained to GRP. Ashik tried to make Manish understand he should apologise. But Manish disappeared. At 2.30 am Monday, he came back with a pestle and attacked Ashik between Karjat and Vangini and looted Rs 1.5 lakh from him.”
Canadian warship on Mumbai shore
Mumbai:Canadian warship HMCS Regina, on a four-day visit to Mumbai, has anchored at Indira Docks. It will hold maritime exercises with Indian Navy on January 24.
