Mumbai: State-run refiner Bharat Petroleum Corporation saw a mixed response in employee-turnout at work at its 300-odd locations pan-India after the indefinite strike by oil PSUs officers began on Wednesday.
"There has been a mixed response as some employees have reported as usual, while some have struck work at our 300 units from 0600 hours across India," a BPCL spokesperson said.
He said the company is taking stock of the situation and will be able to give a better picture of operations affected and their extent by evening.
Officers associated with the Oil Sector Officers Association (OSOA), which claims to represent 55,000 employees of 14 oil PSUs, struck work over non-revision of wages that was due from January 1, 2007.
Discussions between the Petroleum Ministry and the OSOA over a 13-point charter of demands by the latter resulted in a stalemate.
The fuel retailer has one refinery at Mumbai and Kochi each. While the Mumbai refinery has a refining capacity of 12 million tonnes per annum (mmtpa), the Kochi refinery processes 7.5 mmtpa of crude per year.
"We will be taking a call today whether to potentially reduce the capacity. Operations have been normal to an extent so far. People have come at some bottling plants...," the BPCL spokesperson said.
Petroleum Secretary R S Pandey had yesterday said that work at only three of the 17 refineries in the country will be affected.
