The Supreme Court Friday termed as “very important” the issues in a PIL that has sought transfer of exclusive management rights of Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya to Buddhists from the government.

“It is a very important issue and the central government must make its stand clear... we will want to know from them what they have to say about the petition,” said a Bench led by Justice H L Dattu.

Appearing for the government, Additional Solicitor General K V Viswanathan informed the Bench that the Centre was not inclined to file any written response to the petition and that he would argue on the contentions whenever the court sets it for hearing. He added that primarily, it would be for the Bihar government to respond to the the PIL. The Bench recorded his statement that the central government was not interested in giving a response and fixed the matter for hearing after three weeks.
