BMC ups security at card centres in civic schools
The incident had sparked concern over the lack of safety for students in civic schools, especially those that run UID registration centres. BMC has now directed Aadhaar authorities to appoint a security guard at every UID centre in the city.
BMC has also transferred the headmaster of the school. “We have taken down the girl’s statement. She clearly said the accused gagged her with his hand,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner, Mohan Adtani.
“The people visiting the Aadhar centres should not be allowed to venture into the school premises. The agencies who handle the Aadhaar centres should ensure that they provide enough security to safeguard the students,” said Adtani. “It is a central government scheme and one cannot stop them from allowing to use BMC premises, but adequate security can be demanded,” he added.
A civic official said BMC had recruited private security guards for municipal schools to prevent anti-social elements from using the premises at night and to stop children from going out during school hours.
“It is not just the duty of the security guard. The headmaster and teachers should also ensure that no untoward incident happens. It is the prime responsibility of the school staff,” said Adtani.
