A white chalk line now officially marks out the proposed area in Shivaji Park where a garden will be laid out in memory of Bal Thackeray. The civic administration on Wednesday took charge of creating the 20 foot by 40 foot patch of green, which received the BMC’s in-principle approval on Tuesday.

“We have looked at the proposal, and on a night visit to the park yesterday, we saw that it is feasible. We have now marked out the area in white chalk, and from now on it will be the civic administration’s responsibility,” additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said.

The garden, proposed by the Shiv Sena, will be between the Shivaji statue and Nagrik Sangh along Veer Savarkar Marg (Cadell Road). The landscaped area designed by architect Pankaj Joshi will be above ground level, and will have an inner cordoned-off portion around a tree that Thackeray had planted on his 75th birthday in 2001.

“This samadhi will have a raised slab of marble which will hold an urn of the deceased Shiv Sena supremo’s ashes. The garden will be protected by a grill around its perimeter,” a senior Sena corporator said.

Adtani said, “As per the planned design, cost estimates will have to be made, and will have to be approved by the BMC through due process. We will also require permission from the DP (development plan) department, but our superintendent of gardens is already on the job.”
