The after office commute turned into a nightmare for hundreds of Metro commuters on Wednesday evening after services on the Blue Line were disrupted for close to an hour. Metro officials said services on the line were suspended for 55 minutes, after a problem with over-head electrification (OHE) wire.

“Due to the snapping of a strand of OHE wire near the entrance of the Indraprastha station on the line towards Dwarka, no train services were available between Yamuna Bank and Barakhamba from 6.40 pm to 7.35 pm. Because of the breakdown, there was a backlog of trains and an overcrowding of Metro stations,” a DMRC official said.

Officials said, “During the time the services were suspended, operations were run in two loops on Line 3 (Dwarka to Barakhamba and Yamuna Bank to Noida/Vaishali) and repairs were carried out on the OHE in the meantime. All services were restored at 7.35 pm.”

With stations overcrowded and trains arriving after long intervals during rush hour on a line that carries nine lakh passengers every day, commuters were forced to use other modes of transport.

A problem with the OHE is not new to the Blue Line, and over the past year there have been several disruptions. In 2013, there were at least four occasions where services were disrupted on the Blue Line because of OHE related problems.
