A bomb placed in a container went off in the busy Chandni Market in central Kolkata triggering panic during peak office hours Friday. No one was injured and no damage to property has been reported either. Another similar unexploded bomb was also found in the area later.
The low-intensity explosion took place around 12.40 pm. Traders said they heard a loud sound and saw thick smoke emerging from the 14 Madan Street where Chandni Chowk Metro Station and a shopping mall are located. The spot is also close to offices of two newspaper groups.
Officials of Bowbazar Police Station and Lalbazar officials, including DC (Central) D P Singh, reached the spot. A bomb disposal squad and sniffer dogs were also pressed into service.
A search of the area yielded remnants of one exploded improvised bomb along with another that did not explode. The explosives were packed in a tobacco tin container along with bicycle ball bearings and nails as splinters.
“A crude bomb exploded in the area. Another bomb did not explode and has been recovered. A probe has started. There has been no arrest so far,” said D P Singh, deputy commissioner of police central.
Sources said the bomb has been sent for forensic examination. Police are also reportedly looking at CCTV footage. Following the explosion, traffic on Madan Street was stalled for over two hours.
The explosion spread panic in the area. “I cross this place every day, I feel scared. There should be more police vigilance,” said S K Ahmed Hossain, an accountant with an electronics company here.
