BJP MLA in House panel probing sting op resigns

SummaryHe was the only BJP member in the panel and Thursday he submitted his resignation to the Speaker.

BJP MLA Manish Asiza resigned from the seven-member Assembly probe panel constituted by the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey to inquire into the sting operation aired by a TV channel where two police officers reportedly claimed delaying action to contain Muzaffarnagar riots under “political pressure”.

He was the only BJP member in the panel and Thursday he submitted his resignation to the Speaker. In his letter, Asiza said the role of a powerful minister of the state government has come to the fore, courtesy a TV sting operation, but the minister still continues to enjoy power.

“I believe when a person comes in the ambit of an inquiry, he is not entitled to continue till the inquiry is over. In this situation, questions arise on the objective and impartiality of the parliamentary inquiry panel,” Asiza said.

Headed by SP MLA from Kalyanpur, Satish Kumar Nigam, the panel will submit its report before the sine die adjournment of the first Assembly session of 2014.

Other members include Mohammad Irfan, Sangram Yadav, Brijlal Sonkar, all SP MLAs, Dilnawaz Khan of the Congress and Amar Pal Sharma of the BSP.

The Speaker issued orders for the constitution of the probe panel after Leader of Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya and other members raised the issue in the Assembly on September 18, saying allegations were levelled against a senior minister and its authenticity be verified.

BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai opposed the decision of a probe as the accused is a member of the Cabinet. “If the government was serious of conducting an impartial inquiry, it must have requested the PCI or a court to probe it,” he added.
