Police Thursday lodged an FIR against BJP MLA Keshav Prasad Maurya for allegedly inciting students to resort to rioting and arson while delivering a speech at a function at Allahabad University (AU).

As many as 28 people, including local BJP leader Yogesh Shukla, were arrested after the rioting.

A police jeep was torched and several other vehicles were damaged during the protest by AU students and state civil services aspirants against the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) near the university campus.

The students and civil services aspirants are holding protests in AU campus demanding action against UPPSC office-bearers for alleged rampant corruption in the Commission.

Allahabad SP(City) Rajesh Yadav said the students were asked to hold their protest inside the campus but some anti-social elements and students came out of the campus and indulged in hooliganism. One police jeep was set on fire, a fire brigade vehicle was damaged and other vehicles of government officials were attacked by them, said Yadav.

Police cane-charged the protesters to control them. Yadav said 28 persons, including students and some BJP leaders, were arrested. He said Maurya is absconding.

Maurya, MLA from Sirathu in Kaushambi, said he did not give any provocative speech and has been framed by IG(Allahabad zone) and Allahabad SSP. “I did not give any provocative speech. I just said if there is corruption in UPPSC, then an FIR should be lodged against its secretary and chairman. Two other persons delivered speeches after me and there was no violence when I left the university campus,” Maurya told The Indian Express over the phone.
