SummaryBJP accused Gandhi of trying to stoke communal hatred and said he had made unverified allegations against it.

The BJP Friday complained to the Election Commission about what it termed violation of the model code of conduct in Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhiís speeches at Churu and Alwar.

It accused Gandhi of trying to stoke communal hatred and said he had made unverified allegations against BJP holding it responsible for the Muzaffarnagar riots.

Quoting from newspaper reports, the party wrote: ďReferring to the Muzaffarnagar riots in UP, he is reported to have said ĎI was seeing my face in their grief. That is why I am against the politics of BJP. They will set Muzaffarnagar on fire, Gujarat on fire, UP on fire and Kashmir on fire and then you and we will have to douse that...BJP divides peopleí.Ē

ďThe happenings in Muzaffarnagar are still being investigated. He is accusing the BJP without any iota of proof. He is not naming any other party. He says BJP set Gujarat on fire; the last one decade or more has witnessed a riot-free Gujarat. Still he weaves out fancied charges against BJP. The BJP is nowhere in Kashmir and yet he blames them. He is significantly muted and silent on the 1984 riots and erases the role of the Congress in those riots from history,Ē the BJP wrote in the letter.

It also took exception to another sentence in Gandhiís speech where he is said to have accused the Opposition of inciting Hindus against Muslims claiming that it is against established conventions of decency to name communities in communal flare-ups.
