The growth story of Gujarat is no longer confined to Indian states as far as comparison is concerned. Terming the state as one of the fastest growing regions in the world, captains of industry from India and abroad Friday said Gujarat was better and faster than China in terms of growth.

This endorsement by top industrialists assumes political significance as it comes at a time when the pitch for a bigger role for Chief Minister Narendra Modi in national politics is rising in view of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing the inaugural function of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit 2013, Adi Godrej of Godrej Group and president of the CII said, “China’s low-cost advantage is eroding. This is where Gujarat is emerging as a force to reckon with.”

Aand Mahindra, chairman and managing director of Mahindra and Mahindra, went a step ahead and said, “We will soon not talk about the China model in Gujarat, but the Gujarat model in China.”

Paticia Hewitt, president of the UK India Business Council, said that “Gujarat is growing faster than China”.

Her counterpart from the US echoed the view. “Congratulations are due. Gujarat’s growth is stunning. A new benchmark has been set not just in India, but in the world and that benchmark is the fact that progress stumps politics. How many economies can boast of a double-digit GDP? Gujarat is at the top of the list,” said Ron Somers, president the US India Business Council.
