Grand Challenge Canada is a challenge that deals with a specific critical barrier which, if removed, would help solve an important health problem in the developing world, with a high likelihood of global impact through widespread implementation. Shalini Lal, from the Douglas Mental Health University, has participated in the challenge with a volunteer-driven school-based peer-educator programme for prevention of suicides in children, in Pune. The two-minute video explains the target of the problem, the proposed solution, and why it is an innovative approach. The programme is enhanced through social media and mobile phone technologies to stimulate youth leadership in suicide prevention with the support of teachers and parents. The public can engage and vote by logging on to the Grand Challenges Canada website.
