After his impressive performances against Pakistan and England, the senior national selection committee is likely to reward Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Test call-up during Australia’s upcoming visit. Kumar, with his ability to swing the ball both ways, has posed plenty of problems with the new ball in his eight-match ODI career.

With pacer Umesh Yadav a doubtful starter for the Australia series, the selection committee could well turn to Kumar. “It is not that he (Kumar) doesn’t have domestic experience. He has been working hard for the past three-four years now and has been consistent with the ball and bat too,” a national selector said.

The 23-year-old Uttar Pradesh medium-pacer has played 46 first class games and has taken 149 wickets at an average of 26.02. His batting came into the limelight after he scored 128 against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy, and put on a century stand with number eleven Rituraj Singh, to ensure his side’s progress to the final.

Selectors impressed

The Indian team and national selectors have been impressed with the youngster’s maturity in crunch situations. He has completed his ten-over quota in most of his ODIs, often in one spell, and has helped India control proceedings in the first 25 overs. “He can swing the ball both ways and the venues in which India is scheduled to take on Australia might help Bhuvneshwar’s style of bowling. At the same time, he can contribute with the bat too. His presence will give the side more depth,” selector added.
