In an apparent attempt to mount pressure on the UPA government ahead of the Republic Day, senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying that Bharat Ratna be conferred on Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He said Vajpayee should get the Bharat Ratna for his “unique contribution” to “public life” and “development” of the country.

Sinha has drawn the Prime Minister’s attention towards an article written by economist Arvind Panagaria, who “does not belong to any political party”, where he had highlighted Vajpayee’s “stellar contributions” to suggest that he should be conferred Bharat Ratna and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) be named after Vajpayee as well.

“I consider it my pious duty to urge upon you to concede both the demands,” wrote Sinha, while requested the PM.

He added,” I am sure you will demonstrate the magnanimity and grace to give a great man his due.”
