Following information from Nagaland Police about the arrest of one Rajesh Gupta, the Bareilly Police have initiated probe into the gun-running racket that he belonged to.
The police caught Gupta and his associates on November 12, carrying arms and ammunition, including an AK-47 rifle.
Bareilly’s Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Crime, Surendra Pratap Singh said they will be coordinating with Nagaland Police to share investigation details to find out if the racket has any connection with Bareilly or other parts of UP. “We have started the probe and believe the racket may have links in UP,” confirmed Singh.
Gupta stayed with his wife and children in a rented house in Prem Nagar area but was asked to vacate the house by his landlord after the police reached there inquiring about him, confirmed station officer (SO) of Prem Nagar police station Ranjit Singh Yadav.
The police had seized revolvers and pistols, besides the AK-47 rifle, from their possession. He added that Nagaland officials are yet to share with them any details about Gupta so far.
The ASP said that a native of UP’s Shahjahanpur district, Gupta had shifted to Bareilly around six years ago. He used to do odd jobs to make ends meet. His parents stay in a seperate house in Bareilly. His wife told the police that Gupta would often go out of the city for work and return after few days. She claims he had left home about 10 days ago and maintained she was not aware of his involvement in the gun-running racket.
Singh said that they have sent a police team to Shahjahanpur to collect details about Gupta’s antecedents and to find out what made him shift to Bareilly.
However, he added, they have not found any criminal antecedents of Gupta in Bareilly.
