SummaryThe vice-chairman of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh (UP Bar Council) Indra Kumar Chaturvedi resigned from his post on Friday evening, taking moral responsibility for not being able to take up the cause of lawyers’ welfare before Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who was scheduled to come to Allahabad on his maiden visit on Saturday.

The vice-chairman of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh (UP Bar Council) Indra Kumar Chaturvedi resigned from his post on Friday evening, taking moral responsibility for not being able to take up the cause of lawyers’ welfare before Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who was scheduled to come to Allahabad on his maiden visit on Saturday. The resignation came after the CM’s minute-to-minute programme was revealed, which had no mention of his meeting senior lawyers, as was planned before. Incidentally, the CM had to cancel the programme due to bad weather on Saturday.

The UP Bar Council has now called an emergent meeting on December 22 to discuss the resignation and other issues.

Chaturvedi said that a delegation of around 25 senior lawyers was supposed to meet the CM and discuss various issues related to welfare of lawyers. “An earlier meeting was held on December 8, in which it was decided that there would be no huge gathering, and only a select delegation will meet the CM. But the programme was cancelled at the last minute without taking us into confidence. I felt hurt and aggrieved and have sent my resignation to the secretary, as part of procedure,” Chaturvedi said.

Some of the issues that were to be discussed were reviving the provision for anticipatory bail, opening of CBI courts in Allahabad, residences for junior lawyers and increasing the lawyers’ welfare fund, Chaturvedi said. He, however, maintained that he was not angry with anybody.

Chairman of the UP Bar Council, Imran Mabood Khan, said: “We have called an emergent meeting of the Council in the wake of the resignation. We will take a decision thereafter.”

Chaturvedi further added it was probably an adverse report from the local intelligence unit (LIU) on a likely protest by a group of lawyers during the CM’s programme that led to the cancellation of the meeting. A group of lawyers, who claim to be close to Samajwadi Party, have been demanding that they be appointed as government counsels for the past some time.

Bad weather causes CM to cancel Allahabad visit

Weather played spoilsport on Saturday, forcing Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to cancel his maiden visit to Allahabad on Saturday. No fresh dates for his visit to Allahabad have been announced yet. Fog, which had descended on the city in the early hours of Saturday, forced the CM to cancel his programme as it was not conducive for his helicopter to land
