Bar Council vice-chairman puts in papers

The vice-chairman of Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh (UP Bar Council) Indra Kumar Chaturvedi resigned from his post on Friday evening, taking moral responsibility for not being able to take up the cause of lawyers’ welfare before Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who was scheduled to come to Allahabad on his maiden visit on Saturday. The resignation came after the CM’s minute-to-minute programme was revealed, which had no mention of his meeting senior lawyers, as was planned before. Incidentally, the CM had to cancel the programme due to bad weather on Saturday.

The UP Bar Council has now called an emergent meeting on December 22 to discuss the resignation and other issues.

Chaturvedi said that a delegation of around 25 senior lawyers was supposed to meet the CM and discuss various issues related to welfare of lawyers. “An earlier meeting was held on December 8, in which it was decided that there would be no huge gathering, and only a select delegation will meet the CM. But the programme was cancelled at the last minute without taking us into confidence. I felt hurt and aggrieved and have sent my resignation to the secretary, as part of procedure,” Chaturvedi said.

Some of the issues that were to be discussed were reviving the provision for anticipatory bail, opening of CBI courts in Allahabad, residences for junior lawyers and increasing the lawyers’ welfare fund, Chaturvedi said. He, however, maintained that he was not angry with anybody.
