Kolkata: The West Bengal Industrial Development Corp handed over 533.5 acres to Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL) for setting up the country’s first aerotropolis project at Andal near Durgapur for a lease premium of Rs 44.37 crore on Wednesday. The first tranche of land has benn handed over to the company for a 99-year lease.
According to Arvind Pande, chairman of BAPL, “The land acquisition for the remaining area is expected to be over in next few months.” First phase of the integrated airport township project over 2,300 acres includes developing a greenfield merchant airport.
Construction work for the airport is likely to start from March next year. According to company sources, the airport would take 18 months to build and should be operational within 24 months..
Earlier, the project ran into trouble after Coal India Ltd (CIL) opposed it on the grounds of safeguarding coal reserves. BAPL then shifted the golf course planned in the area.
“We have already received the clearance from the ministry of civil aviation and got financial closure for the project,” said Pande. The company is in the process of completing the detailed engineering plan for the airport.
Taking a leaf from the Singur and Nandigram episode, the project offered rehabilitation packages including a land-for-land scheme to land losers. Apart from that, the rehabilitation package included free vocational training at ITI Durgapur to an eligible person each from the land loser’s family.
The project, in which Changi Airports International has 26% stake, plans to attract an investment of $2.2 billion.
