The protesters have a six-point charter of demands which includes curbing inflation, a comprehensive unorganised workers Bill, a comprehensive loan-waiver scheme for farmers and proper implementation of labour laws. They are also opposing the government’s acceptance of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, which the unions allege favours only the officers and neglects the junior employees.

The strike is also likely to affect defence production, pharma, steel manufacturing and other sectors.

“In West Bengal, there will be road and rail blockades. All air services will be stalled as the federation of airport employees have also joined the call for the general strike,” said CITU president MK Pandhe....
