



Pune, Dec 22: Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) kicked off a TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) project at its Chakan plant with Sueo Yamaguchi, TPM consultant and Rajiv Bajaj, joint MD in attendance.
Company’s Akurdi and Waluj plants have also been on the TPM route. The TPM project was kicked off at Akurdi in February 2001 and is expecting to reach TPM certification in 2005. The Waluj plant started implementing TPM during October 2002.
Mr Bajaj was hopeful of the Chakan plant being able to achieve stringent TPM targets set for the plant while Mr Yamaguchi was confident that the plant would be able to challenge the TPM award soon.
Before kicking off the TPM activity, the plant had put in a year of committed efforts to be in a position from where it can now go full steam. These included practicing TPM in model cells, creating awareness amongst employees, creating a formal TPM organisation, setting up of expert sub-committees to implement eight pillars of TPM.
The Japanese concept of TPM aims at establishing a corporate culture which maximises production system effectiveness through out its life cycle, eliminate shop floor losses through out the entire production system achieve zero defects, zero breakdowns and zero accidents.
This involves all the employees and functions of the organisation, including production, sales and management.
