The Thane police have arrested six people in connection with a robbery at a gold finance company in Nashik last year. The police said the robbers were inspired by a Bollywood film, Special 26, to plan and execute the robbery.

According to the Thane Police, Deepak Dalvi, Ashok Ranpise and Jivan Singh, were picked up from Dombivali on January 2 in connection with another robbery. While being interrogated, they allegedly confessed to having participated in the Nashik robbery. Their confession led to the arrest of Kartik Devendra, Chandrashekhar Rane and Rajdutt Rane. Of the 15 kg of stolen gold, the police have recovered 13.84 kg so far.

The police said that Chandrashekhar and Rajdutt, brothers, found out about and devised a plan to steal the large quantity of gold stored in the vault of the Mannapuram gold finance company after a visit to its Nashik office.

“The gang struck a day after the security guard’s gun had been given for servicing. Three of them dressed as policemen, complete with uniforms, fake pistols and holsters, while the other three posed as accused arrested in a robbery case. The fake policemen told the management that the three ‘robbers’ had sold stolen gold to the company and that they needed to ‘recover’ it. The gang then loaded around 15 kg of gold jewellery in a car and fled,” said Thane Police Commissioner K P Raghuvanshi.

“They derived inspiration from the Bollywood movie Special 26, and studied it before planning and executing the robbery,” he added. The movie, starring Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher, is based on a real life heist on March 1987.
