Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan, who was sworn in as a minister in the newly formed Akhilesh government in the state recently, would be administered fresh oath of the office as a cabinet minister by Governor B L Joshi at Raj Bhavan on Sunday.
Sources in the SP said he could not take oath properly on March 15. “He could not take oath as per constitutional procedure and thus he would be administered fresh oath tomorrow,” the sources added.
In the meantime, a PIL was filed in Allahabad High Court claiming that Azam has not taken oath of the office as a minister properly. Sensing the possible legal problems, sources added that the SP leadership watched the video footage of the March 15 oath-taking ceremony and decided to get fresh oath administered to Azam. “Raj Bhavan also took cognizance of the media report in this regard. The oath letter is read in two parts — loyalty to the Constitution and Secrecy. Perhaps Azam had repeated one part,” the sources said.
After tomorrow’s oath-taking ceremony at the Raj Bhavan, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is likely to allocate the portfolios to his newly appointed ministers. “SP camp wants to keep the portfolios of ministers a secret till tomorrow’s oath-taking ceremony. Had the CM allocated the portfolios before tomorrow’s oath-taking ceremony, it would have invited fresh troubles for the party leadership. Most of the ministers are in race with each other to get important portfolios,” a source in the SP said.
Akhilesh has inducted 47 ministers, including 19 cabinet-rank and 28 minister of state, in his ministry. Meanwhile, all the newly appointed ministers have been allotted their chambers in secretariat buildings.
