Azad targets doctors for refusing to go to rural areas

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday said that doctors were unwilling to go to rural areas to serve people as they were more interested in earning money through sex determination techniques. “I have tried hard to motivate them, but all innovative ideas have failed. They are busy in sex determination tests as they get more money out of it,” he said.
Accusing doctors of putting pressure on the Medical Council of India (MCI) so that it does not approve the Bachelor of Rural Health Care course, Azad said that he would approach the MCI again and ask the Board of Governors to recognise the degree. The course seeks to create a qualified cadre of health workers to be posted at sub-centres.
Initially mooted by the MCI, during the tenure of the then president Dr Ketan Desai, in a state health ministers conference, however, the course was endorsed unanimously.
