The UT Police has suspended the investigating officer and transferred two officers for their alleged carelessness in handling the Audi and Tavera accident case.

Sub-Inspector Kuldeep Singh, who was appointed to investigate the case, has been suspended while station house officer (SHO) of Sector 17 police station Ram Gopal and in-charge of police post, Sector 17 bus stand, Harminderjit Singh have been transferred to Police Lines, Sector 26. Inspector Dalsher Singh has replaced Ram Gopal as the Sector 17 SHO. Dalsher was earlier working with Proclamation of Offenders Staff, Chandigarh.

On the basis of the inquiry report submitted by Senior Superintendent of Police Naunihal Singh to Inspector General R P Upadhyaya on Thursday, the three were found to be careless in handling the accident case.

Two among four students and the Tavera driver had died in the accident that happened at Sector 17/18 light point on July 23.

After the incident, Sector 17 police station officers had filed an FIR against the Tavera driver, Hast Bahadur, who was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. After a hue and cry was raised by the families of the deceased, another FIR was registered against the Audi driver.

“Two FIRs were registered instead of one (no case can have more than one FIR registered in it), clearly showing that there was carelessness on the part of the three officials handling the case,” said R P Upadhayaya. “To remove the confusion and reach a logical conclusion, a Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been formed which will now investigate the case further.”

The SIT comprises DSP Ashish Kapoor, DSP Satish Kumar, Sector 11 SHO Gurmukh Singh and Crime Branch in-charge Ranjodh Singh.

During investigation, the police had identified a 30-year-old resident of Sector 4 Panchkula, Rajat Kohli, as the Audi driver. But it was not clear whether Rajat was driving the Audi or his driver Sukhpal at the time of the accident.
