ASG Parasaran appointed solicitor gen
A formal notification is awaited.
Mohan Parasaran, son of former attorney general of India and senior advocate, K Parasaran, prefers to keep a low profile, but is one of the sought-after law officers in difficult matters.
He has argued a number of constitutional and corporate cases in the Supreme Court and high courts. In the recent years, he has argued for the government in a number of high-profile cases, the latest being a dispute over the supply of gas for KG Basin between the two Ambani brothers. He has also been successful in the Vodafone tax case in the Bombay High Court.
Parasaran was first appointed ASG in 2004 after the UPA came to power and was designated senior advocate in 2002. Nariman's resignation, as per sources, had come after difference of opinion between him and Union law minister Ashwani Kumar.
Nariman, the son of eminent jurist Fali S Nariman, was appointed SG on July 23, 2011 following the resignation of Gopal Subramanium on July 14, 2011. There had been speculation that Nariman was unhappy over certain directions of Ashwani Kumar and the ministry.
Subramaniam had resigned as SG in the wake of Nariman being appointed as special counsel to represent telecom minister Kapil Sibal in a 2G-related case in the Supreme Court, apparently without his knowledge.
