Srinagar: Srinagar erupted again today after the the body of a missing youth, Asrar Ahmad Dar, was found with his throat slit, sparking angry protests on the streets with securitymen coming under attack and a police vehicle being torched. Officials denied the charge that the youth had been abducted by security forces and said it seemed to be the handiwork of criminals.

Violent protests such as the one witnessed today are becoming more and more frequent, adding to the problems of Omar Abdullah who, when he took over as Chief Minister earlier this year, raised hopes of giving J&K a “politically serious and administratively accountable” government. Six months and two major incidents in Shopian and Baramulla later, questions are now being raised about his government’s efficiency.

The Chief Minister and his deputy declined to comment for this report.

Consider the following:

The 38-year-old Abdullah had promised a Cabinet that would mark a generational shift. But today, there is no young face in the nine-member Cabinet — he remains the youngest, grappling with as many as 20 portfolios, from Home to Planning, Agriculture to Information Technology, Animal Husbandry to Hajj and Auqaf. Cabinet expansion has been repeatedly put on hold.

The National Conference decision to field Abdullah’s uncle Mustafa Kamal in the Hazratbal Assembly by-election did not go down well in sections of the party. For, Kamal was defeated in the Tangmarg constituency and his victory in the May by-election strengthened criticism that the Abdullahs put their family first given that he is all set to join the Cabinet.

Abdullah has continued with the administrative arrangement put in place during Governor’s rule although he promised his own team of bureaucrats. Questions were raised when senior officers failed to respond to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s queries on revenue and development during a recent meeting. The Cabinet expressed displeasure over this embarrassing ignorance but let the matter rest there.

The promise of an open and transparent government remains just that. A much-publicised 24/7 call centre in the CM’s office to provide greater public access is still to start. Nor has the promise of a stringent RTI been kept. Abdullah’s key political advisor is his friend Davinder Rana, a businessman-turned-politician from Jammu who is in charge of the CM’s office. Although the CM has begun hold public interactions at district headquarters, there is no advisor who can be a political...

If he had not any talent.he is not brave how come he made people believe him and come out to vote.It is the indian army , and other agencies which dont want to be sent back to barracks.they want to enjoy the dal lake, pahalgam and gulmarg. The officers having nice time evnen their families enjoying holidays in kashmir. They dont want AFSPA to be withdrawn and creating so much problem but this way they are again sowing seeds of hatred and it doesnt matter wether OMar Is CM or not. It seems they are going to have tough time again because guns are silent and only peacefull protests. They cant kill and suppress because kashmir has gone to international arena and India knows it well. Pakistan perhapes have entered a deal with US UK you help us in kashmie we will help you in Afghan . And really india has a lot to worry about. Because pakistan is nowadays being praised and US is talking Kashmir every day in and out . Whatever they daily say we are not going to mediate yes only help. OK

when omar took the state administration it was stated that young chief Minister will shape it in a new way but it proved fruitless and human rights violation has increased in the state and the slogan of Zero tolrance remain on papers only. It is evident that experience stands for a great omar is young and lacking the experience how to control the situation is important , the berocrates around him have dosed him in shopain case where in initial stage he declared in press that it is dromning case which has exposed his effiency.the sensitive state like J and k should be looked by some expert politician , congress high command should think on it otherwise the situation will be revert back of 1989.

So much hype is given to one elected individual by media because he is young. Administration is abt control and direction. You dont get that by giving emotional speeched in Parliament. One shud understand that Omar Abdulla is just one more of an abdulla with no real talent at all.I hope J
