Days after social activist Arvind Kejriwal became chief minister, the Delhi government has asked Delhi Police to immediately transfer over 40 senior investigators to the government’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB).

The request is being seen as a major step by the Kejriwal government to give the ACB teeth to act against corruption in government departments.

The ACB has been handicapped by a severe shortage of personnel at the assistant commissioner of police (ACP), inspector and sub-inspector levels. The branch currently has two ACPs and 11 inspectors against its sanctioned strength of nine ACPs and 30 inspectors.

Following the receipt of the request from the Delhi government’s vigilance department, files have begun to move at the police headquarters, sources said. The Headquarters branch of the Delhi Police is currently in the process of identifying personnel to be posted to the ACB.

Sources said a verbal request was received on Wednesday to expedite the transfers. “A request has been made for the transfer of seven ACPs and 19 inspectors along with at least 15 sub-inspectors. Presently, there is a huge shortage of staff at the branch. These three ranks are those who work as investigating officers, depending on the case. In most sensitive cases, an inspector or ACP is made the investigating officer,” a source in the vigilance department said.

ACB officers are from the Delhi Police, and the branch is usually headed by an IPS officer. Unlike the Delhi Police, the ACB chief reports to the Delhi government.
