AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday met the India TV anchor who had attempted suicide, alleging that she was harassed by two employees of her channel. The anchor, a senior journalist, had attempted suicide outside the gate of her office after she was denied entry, but was declared out of danger later.

Arvind Kejriwal met the anchor for around 25 minutes on Tuesday afternoon and tweeted, “Jst now met India TV anchor, who attempted suicide alleging harassment at workplace. Police shud immediately act on her complaint...i wud also urge media to take up her issue. There shud also be some mechanism to address grievances of journos who feel harassed.”

Following her complaint, the Noida Police had registered a case under sections of abetment to suicide and related provisions. “She claimed in her statement that after a dispute with some people at India TV, she sent a text message to one of the staff members, saying she was resigning from the channel. She alleged that the text message was passed on by the recipient to the Human Resource Department, which took it to be her formal resignation and removed her from the channel. She was shocked that India TV terminated her employment based on her text message,” SSP (Gautam Buddh Nagar) Dr Preetinder Singh said.

Minutes before her suicide bid, the journalist wrote on her Facebook status, “Last gudbye to all of you! I am committing suicide. Thanks to India TV...”

A day later, a spokesperson for India TV claimed that contrary to what the journalist had alleged, the matter of her resignation had been settled “amicably” between her and the channel.

“Last week, the journalist had a minor disagreement with her seniors in the newsroom, following which she sent an SMS to her department head, saying she was resigning. Her decision was confirmed with her. Thereafter, her decision to resign, communicated by her through SMS and confirmed by her, was forwarded to HR. HR proceeded to accept her resignation. They also informed her by mail that her decision to resign has been accepted and she should meet them for relieving formalities. She came to office and submitted her identity card, etc., and the matter was amicably closed,” the spokesperson claimed.
