SummaryAggrieved students to meet CAP officials today

Studetns who applied for class 11 (Arts) by Common Admission Process (CAP) were in for a harrowing time as colleges turned them away saying the Arts division is defunct.

Officials claim due to poor response, most colleges do not want to run the Arts division this academic year.

A CAP official said, “Most students apply for professional courses. Hence, many colleges have only 4-5 students applying for Arts. Running a division just for 4-5 students is irrational.” The move by these colleges has left several students in a fix.

Praveen Goveas’s son was allotted DY Patil College through CAP.

When Praveen went to get his son admitted, the college denied admission saying they do not have an Arts stream.

“I was shocked to know the college allotted to my son did not have Arts stream. So I went to Garware College and asked officials about this goof-up, but they were not helpful. This lackadaisical approach from authorities is horrible,” said Praveen.

“My son is frustrated. Classes have already begun and he is yet to get admission. Now, they will get my son admitted to a low-rung college, which is unjustified as he should have got a college as per his merit,” Praveen added.

On the issue, Mangala Khanvelkar, vice-principal of Abasaheb Garware College, the main co-ordination centre for CAP said, “We have received complaints from parents regarding the allotment of seats in Arts stream. The colleges have sanction for Arts division, but due to poor response, they are not functional. There are also few takers for Arts stream in Marathi medium.”

Suman Shinde, Deputy Director, Pune Division (Education) said, “At 11 am on July 25, we have asked all such students to come to Garware College. Based on the availability and merit of students, we will allot them seats. There are nine colleges who are having a problem having Arts section. The issue will be taken up in tomorrow’s meeting.”
