Johannesburg, May 19:: ArcelorMittal South Africa Ltd, Africa's largest steelmaker, agreed to lift the pay of workers belonging to the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa by 12 per cent from the end of June.
It also agreed to increase Numsa workers' pay by inflation plus 1 percentage point next year.
Tami Didiza, spokesman for the Vanderbijlpark-based steelmaker, said. South African inflation accelerated to 10.1 per cent in March. Inflation has exceeded the central bank's target range of 3 to 6 per cent since April 2007, prompting five interest rate increases in less than a year.
"We have yet to sign with the other two unions, Solidarity and United Association of South Africa," he said.
The company, 52 per cent owned by the world's biggest steelmaker ArcelorMittal, employed 9,100 people last year.
Numsa members account for 2,464 of its workers, with another 2,406 belonging to Solidarity and 879 to UASA, the company said.
