: Water is the lifeline of human beings. The human body needs about 2.5 litres of water every day. Drinking the required quantity of water flushes out toxins and keeps the body healthy. Unfortunately, the water we drink can be polluted. Polluted water may look clean, and even taste fine, but may contain germs and other impurities that can cause water borne diseases.

Companies like Eureka Forbes Ltd, Pentair, Usha Brita and Alfaa offer a wide range of water purifiers both for domestic and corporate use. It is estimated that about 25 lakh homes in the country use water purifiers. And during the monsoon, the sale of water purifiers increases by over 20 per cent across the country.

Market leader Aquaguard has four types of water purifiers: Reviva (Rs 14,500); Compact Classic (Rs 6,590); Nova (Rs 7,590) and I-Nova (7,690). Of these, Compact Classic sells the most. Says Samrat Mallick, manager, Marketing, Eureka Forbes, “The Aquaguard Compact Classic is ideal for home use. This water purifier has a three stage purification process, which destroys all known bacteria and viruses.”

The first stage of Compact Classic’s purification process is called sediment filtering—the water first passes through a sediment filter, which incorporates a graded density cartridge that strains out physical impurities present in water, such as dirt and mud. The second stage is called activated carbon, where the water passes through the carbon chamber, which reduces colour, odour, organic impurities and free gases like chlorine. It also hinders bacterial growth. The third stage is through the UV chamber, where the water is subjected to ultraviolet treatment, a universally proven safeguard against water borne diseases.

Explains Mr Mallick, “The unique electronic system in Aquaguard continuously monitors the purification level and stops water flow if purification is inadequate.”

Pentair has five models of water purifiers: Countertop UFD 1A (Rs 8,900); Countertop UFS 1A (Rs 6,600); Countertop RO (Rs 21,990); Wall Mounted RO Delux (Rs 18,990) and Wall Mounted RO Standard (Rs 16,990).

In the first two models, an ultra filter is used to remove bacteria and viruses from the water. Says Sanjay Sapra, director, Sales and Marketing, Pentair, “In our system, the ultra filter is regularly and tangentially washed free of contaminants ensuring that one never gets impure water. Ultra filter is an outstanding technology for ensuring very consistent pure water quality.”

The last three models of Pentair use the reverse osmosis (RO) process. Reverse osmosis filters water under high pressure, using...
