The Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to recruit over 50,000 teachers this year through the District Selection Committee-2008.

Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who chaired a high-level meeting of the education department here today, directed the authorities concerned to issue a notification immediately to set the recruitment process in motion.

The Congress government has come under severe flak for not recruiting any teachers in the last four-and-a-half years despite acute shortage of teachers in 76,213 Government schools.

The shortage of teachers has also seriously hit the state government's plans to strengthen about 6,500 schools as Success High Schools and also introduce parallel English medium sections.

Crucial subjects like Mathematics, English and Physical Science lacked the required number of teachers and this has hampered plans to open additional sections in Government schools.

While the total required strength of teachers is 1.02 lakh, only about 72,000 are currently available, leaving a shortfall of 33,618.

The Government now wants to upgrade 9,217 posts of secondary-grade teachers (SGT) besides filling up 6,146 SGT posts. This will take the number of posts to be filled to 39,897, according to a communique from the Chief Minister's Office.
