With a view to providing enough drinking water to Hyderabad, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to cut water supply to various construction projects besides 900 and odd schools here.

"We have already stopped water supply to schools as majority of them are closed due to summer vacations and diverted the water for domestic consumption," said Mr M G Gopal, managing director, Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board. Further, the metro water board is identifying the major construction projects, both residential and commercial complexes. "Very shortly we will stop water supply to these activities also as per the government decision," Mr Gopal said while reviewing the water supply position in the twin cities.

According to water department sources, the board could supply 130 MGD of water as against the regular demand of 162 MGD. There is a nominal increase in the water supply by 5 MGD due to the commissioning of sump-cum-pump house at Singur dam and the board is planning to draw another three to four MGD from Singur system in the coming days, Mr Gopal said.

Despite putting in efforts to solve water problem, the water supply position in the twin cities has not been improved and the board has requested the residents to use water judiciously. The Osman Sagar, which has storage capacity of 3.9 TMC, has fully dried up. The Himayat Sagar has just about 0.259 tmc and the city is entirely dependent on Singur and Manjira waters, which together has 11.877 tmc. Further, the metro water has decided to go in for drilling of 210 new bore wells in the municipal area over and above 200 bore wells drilled recently.
