The US-based Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) launched a server platform based on its eight-core and 12-core processors in the domestic market.

The new serve platform can offer more memory at a lower price tag, AMD India managing director Ravi Swaminathan claimed at the launch.

A server is defined as any combination of hardware or software designed to provide services to clients. Any computer or device serving out applications or services can technically be called a server. A processor is the portion of a computer or server that carries out instructions and is the primary element that carries out the functions.

By adding more cores (which defines the efficiency of the servers), AMD and its rival Intel are making it possible for companies to consolidate more applications on a single server. This helps customers to reduce the number of servers in a data centre which in turn reduces energy costs, an industry analyst said.

Meanwhile, Intel also launched its 8-core Xeon 7500 processor which is expected to serve as the core for its server platforms.

Acer and other original equipment manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Cray and SGI are planning to introduce new systems based on AMD server platform.

According to the Gartner data, in terms of revenue Intel is the market leader worldwide with a share of 14.6 per cent (in semiconductor space), while AMD has a market share of mere 2.3 per cent.
